Utica, my hometown, has suffered economically over the past 60 years. Though it has been depressed, the people there show amazing resilience and pride. This string quintet reflects the energy and conflict of economic struggle and perseverance.

Long after I had written the piece, I named Lauren’s Anthem after my younger daughter. The energy of the song resonated with me with her spirit. I envisioned the Canadian Brass playing it one day….

I Can't Fit In
I Can’t Fit In was written back when I was in high school. I had lost all confidence in myself—writing this song was a form of journaling (even though I had no concept of the word at the time) my strong feelings of sadness and feeling lost.
Discussion
Steve has been a friend of mine since the late 80’s. We love to discuss politics, philosophy, ethics. We played in dad band together. Steve is a natural tenor which doesn’t come out in the current piece. He like me has been composing for some time.
