Food Deserts
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), nearly 39.5 million people — which is about 12.8% of the U.S. population — were living in low-income and low-access areas, often referred to as “food deserts”, as of 2017². These are areas where residents have limited access to supermarkets or large food stores¹.
It’s also worth noting that about 6% of Americans live in more extreme food deserts, where they live more than a mile away from the nearest urban food store or at least 20 miles from the nearest rural food retailer¹.
